What Is a Roman Numerals Generator?
This generator converts Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3...) to their Roman numeral equivalents (I, II, III...) in real time. Type any number — or text containing numbers — and the generator identifies all numbers and converts them to Roman numerals instantly. Type "Chapter 4" and get "Chapter IV". Type "2026" and get "MMXXVI". Copy the result and paste it anywhere.
The Roman Numeral System — Complete Reference
Roman numerals use seven base symbols. I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. Numbers are formed by combining these symbols following two rules.
The additive rule: symbols placed in order from largest to smallest are added together. VI = V + I = 5 + 1 = 6. XII = X + I + I = 10 + 1 + 1 = 12. DCCCXL = D + C + C + C + X + L = 500 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 40 = 840.
The subtractive rule: when a smaller symbol precedes a larger symbol, the smaller is subtracted from the larger. IV = V - I = 5 - 1 = 4. IX = X - I = 10 - 1 = 9. XL = L - X = 50 - 10 = 40. XC = C - X = 100 - 10 = 90. CD = D - C = 500 - 100 = 400. CM = M - C = 1000 - 100 = 900.

Where Roman Numerals Are Used Today
Super Bowl: The NFL uses Roman numerals for every Super Bowl — Super Bowl I through the current game. This tradition has made Roman numerals a recognized symbol in American popular culture.
Film and television: Movie copyright years in end credits traditionally use Roman numerals (© MMXXV). Major film franchises number sequels with Roman numerals: Rocky II, Star Wars Episode IV, Mission: Impossible II.
Clocks: Traditional analog clock faces use Roman numerals for hour markers. Architectural and luxury clocks consistently use Roman numerals for their classical aesthetic connection.
Books: Front matter (preface, table of contents, introduction) uses lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv) to distinguish it from the main text, which begins at Arabic numeral 1.
Royalty and papacy: Monarchs and popes use Roman numerals as regnal numbers — King Charles III, Pope Benedict XVI, Queen Elizabeth II.
Tattoos: Dates in Roman numerals are among the most popular tattoo formats. A birth date, anniversary, or significant year in Roman numerals carries a timeless quality that Arabic numerals in the same context do not convey. Always verify the correct conversion before your appointment.
Converting Years to Roman Numerals
Years are the most common Roman numeral conversion request. The pattern: M for each thousand, then CM for 900 or D+hundreds for 500+, then XC for 90 or L+tens for 50+, then IX for 9 or V+ones for 5+, then I for remaining 1s. Year 2026: two thousands (MM) + twenty (XX) + six (VI) = MMXXVI. Year 1999: one thousand (M) + nine hundreds (CM) + ninety (XC) + nine (IX) = MCMXCIX.

Yes. All encoder tools on Fontlix work in both directions. Paste encoded text to decode it, or paste plain text to encode it. Results appear instantly.
Yes. All encoders use standard algorithms and character mappings. Morse code follows International Morse standards, Binary uses standard 8-bit ASCII, Base64 follows RFC 4648.
Yes. Encoded text is standard output that works in any text field, email, document, or system that accepts the encoding format.
This tool encodes standard Latin text characters. Extended Unicode characters use multi-byte representations in some encodings. Results are shown for all input characters that have encodings.
